Don't Blame Talk, Blame Crazy

The events that unfolded this past weekend in Arizona are truly troubling.  A federal judge, a 9-year-old girl, a political aid, and bystanders are dead.  Many more injured, including a congresswoman. The gunman, Jared Lee Loughner opened fire in a crowd of people.  He planned it and talked about it on Myspace, YouTube, and other internet sites.

The media quickly jumped on who to blame. Who is responsible?  Many were quick to blame talking heads, such as Sarah Palin and her use of ‘gun targets” that targeted political races.   Glenn Beck responded had words. Even the Pima County (where the shooting occurred) Sheriff Clarence Dupnik, blamed the country’s explosive rhetoric on Rush Limbaugh:

Jon Stewart, You Need Me

Jon Stewart and his Daily Show crew are on to something.  Just as Glenn Beck had his “Restoring Honor” rally in Washington D.C., Steward is holding a “Rally To Restore Sanity.” http://www.rallytorestoresanity.com/ on October 30, 2010.  Just days before the mid-term elections.  Stephen Colbert is holding a counter rally, “March to Keep The Fear Alive” http://www.keepfearalive.com/ on the same day.  This is all very funny and will no doubt draw cheer and jeers from conservatives and liberals.

Clearly a farce on Glenn Beck, Stewart and Colbert are masterminds at political and social comedy, however they are missing one essential element in this rally.  The clergy.  Glenn Beck had his “Black Robe Regiment” with his rally and Jon Stewart needs clergy.  Actually, he needs me.  I propose that Steward build a Black Robe Brigade.  I wrote about Beck’s Christian aspirations and open theism in my Times Union blog post and Stewart needs some clergy support.

So, what can I do for you Jon Stewart?

"Twitter Storms" & Haikus Attack Glenn Beck

If a tree falls during a  “twitter storm” and no one is around, does it make a sound?

That is what I asked myself when I stumbled upon this morning’s Washington Post “On Faith” section that caught my attention: Protests on Twitter against Glenn Beck.  That’s right, cyberspace protesting using Twitter: a Twitter storm.  Apparently, this is the first such known protest on Twitter.

You may remember Glenn Beck pleading his listeners to flee their churches if their priest or pastor preached “social justice” because those are code words for “socialism.”  You can read my blog post about this at my Times Union Newspaper blog here and here.

These protests consist of “twitter storming” or “tweet storming” Beck.  Apparently, a “tweetstorm” occurs when users on Twitter inundate a user’s account with thousands of messages, mentions, and replies that use the user’s @ username.  The very interesting and funny website Haik U Glenn Beck has thousands of haikus that speak to our “inner zen” of poetry. The idea is to use these haikus to send to Beck’s twitter account — one a minute till they run out.

Some of the haikus that stuck out on the website are:
